General Skilled Migration Visas

There are a number of visas available for skilled individuals/families looking to migrate to Australia, these include:
- 189 – Skilled Independent Visa
- 190 – Skilled Nominated Visa
- 491 – Skilled Regional/Provisional
To get started you need to make sure your nominated occupation is on the skilled occupation list Skilled occupation list (homeaffairs.gov.au)
Subclass 189
Skilled Independent Visa
- A points based meaning points will be rewarded for age, English ability, work experience, qualifications etc.
- The pass mark is currently 65 but usually you will need to achieve higher points than this.
- The applicant needs to successfully complete an IELTS test (English test) and also have a positive skills assessment conducted by the appropriate assessing authority.
- Lodge an expression of interest through skilled select and be invited to apply
- Meet health and character requirements
- This is a permanent residency visa
Subclass 190
Skilled Nominated Visa
- It’s a point based visa which mean points will be rewarded for age, English ability, work experience, skills etc
- The pass mark is currently 65 but usually you will need to achieve higher points
- The applicant needs to successfully complete an IELTS test (English test) and also have a positive skills assessment conducted by the appropriate assessing authority.
- Lodge an expression of interest through skilled select and be invited to apply
- Be nominated by a State or Territory Government
- Meet health and character requirements
- This is a permanent residency visa.
Subclass 491
Skilled Regional (Provisional) Visa
This visa is a 3 year provisional visa which requires holders to live and work in a regional area. To qualify, you need to be sponsored by either a relative living in a designated area or a State or Territory Government.
- The candidate will need to have a positive skills assessment
- English criteria – candidate will usually need to complete an English test
- An expression of interest needs to be lodged through skills select and wait to be invited to apply by the Department of home affairs.
- If you have been invited to apply you need to respond within 90 days by lodging a valid visa application
- This is a provisional visa with a pathway to permanent residency.
